Here, she is an incarnation of the multi-armed goddess Lakshmi, the bestower of wealth, power and sovereignty, as she emerges out of the cosmic ocean of milk. She is worshipped by men who offer her garlands and a cow swims around her. Here, Chandiramani aims to flip the script of power in gender roles – rather than the subservient, invisible female as server and feeder, she is powerful and respected for her creative qualities. The border, inspired by Eva Wang’s illustrations in a children’s book of Chinese folktales, references the masculine and feminine coming together in harmony with nature, and the importance of childhood in conditioning our own conformation to gender roles. The question Chandiramani poses, that has inspired her for years: why are cows treated better than women [in India], when the very powers that render them sacred apply to women as well?
