Mix your milk with my by Riya Chandiramani
$50,000.00
- Medium:
Acrylic on Canvas - Size: 61 cm (W) X 91.4 cm (H)
- In Riya Chandiramani’s Mix Your Milk With My – a reference to the 2005 Black Eyed
Peas Hit, My Humps – the goddess Devi rides Sonny, the male cuckoo bird mascot for
Cocoa Puffs. Devi holds a milk bottle in her hand. In public, women are expected to
feed using a bottle, not their breasts, because society considers breastmilk vulgar. In
another hand, Devi holds a cocoa bean, symbol of a vagina: seed of life. Sonny through
lotus flowers, symbols of purity, and behind them, breast-mountains spurt breastmilk.
On either side of Devi, Chinese text from a 1973 cultural revolution poster reads ‘unite
to achieve an even greater victory.’ Here Chandiramani references that feminism does
not mean dismantling the patriarchy for the matriarchy. Instead, feminism means
creating a balanced and equal world.
