- About the piece: The pinnacle of Kapitan Pattimara from the Maluku story lies right towards the end of his life, when he captured Fort Duurstede from the Dutch in 1817. He was instantly declared the leader of the Moluccan people, who led a failed attempt at independence from Indonesia. The failed attempt at recognizing the Republic of South Maluku left its government in exile in the Netherlands and caused terrorist attacks in the 1970s. Regardless of Kapitan Pattimaras’ identity, Indonesia’s President Suharto has declared him a national hero and the honor has landed him on this colorful banknote.
