- About the piece: Located along the eastern edge of the African continent, Somalia is known as the Horn of Africa, resembling the horn-like shape created by the landmass separated by the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. Unfortunately, Somalia’s history is filled with instability. It is of no surprise that many men around the Horn of Africa, even in Yemen, chew the khat leaf. It is considered a recreational drug but also used as medicine, aiding depression, obesity and male infertility, to name a just few. Ten of these banknotes pictured would give you 100 grams of Khat, which would be enough to fill up your mouth. It is hard to hide khat usage, it is very much easy to identify, considering you need to chew and keep the khat in your mouth for hours. It’s worth a google.
